About me
I'm Alison Johnston, the creative force behind Take Root Garden Design. My work is informed by a lifelong passion and curiosity about nature and the world around us. I'm a total hippy at heart and believe that if we spend a little bit of time outside everyday taking in some of the beauty at hand, these little moments of joy can make our lives so much better. Science backs this up too.
After a previous career in statistical analysis for healthcare transformation, I studied Garden Design at the Northern School of Garden Design, graduating in 2016. It was perhaps not the most conventional next-step, but its the perfect blend of solving problems, spending time with nature and artistic expression. Since then I've worked with many clients across the Yorkshire and Lancashire Pennine area to improve their garden spaces. I get a real kick from helping people fall in love with their garden.
I believe that gardens should be a joy, not a chore. You don't need to know latin names for plants or complex pruning techniques to be a happy gardener. I want people to feel at home in their garden, not mystified or overwhelmed.
Home is Slaithwaite, near Huddersfield.
My achievements
RHS Tatton Flower Show 2023
Sliver Gilt Medal
In July 2023 I designed and built a 'Long Border' at the RHS Tatton Flower Show, winning a prestigious Silver-Gilt Medal. My border, 'Escape the T rex!' was a playful garden designed with the young-at-heart in mind.
